Your looking for the perfect gym, trainer, and diet. Your exploring calories, nutrition, gluten free or not? Have you considered your relationship with food? Your relationship with food is closely connected to how you love yourself and care for yourself.
So much of losing weight is about our addiction to food. Time and time again we fail at our weight loss attempts because of strong physiological and emotional cravings. We all want to be healthy. Given the choice, we would all eat nothing but healthy food if we knew we could be happy and satisfied. Why then is it so hard to let go of the food choices that cause us physical and emotional harm?
We eat to manage stress, regulate anxiety and mediate depression. Sometimes we eat simply to comfort ourselves. Humans have a number of needs, the need to belong, the need to love and be loved to name just a few. When we do not get our needs filled, we seek artificial ways to fill them. Comfort foods artificially fill our needs.
We also eat to escape uncomfortable feelings. If we cannot deal with our feelings or do not want to, the next best thing is to eat. Whether we do not like what we have done, whether we are vulnerable or want to dissociate from reality, or from ourselves, food provides the fantasy that we can escape. Tapping into the pleasure centers of the brain, food helps us to cope, at least for the short term. www.better-bodies.ca
